Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day

Grand Canyon

I had left the Grand Canyon heading for Flagstaff when I spotted something interesting, a sign for Wupatki National Monument. As I’m prone to do, I headed that way.

Wupatki National Monument

I was amazed by the Wupatki National Monument. As I walked around the most intact pueblo that I’ve seen I couldn’t help but think of my mother. She loved to explore the Arizona Native American history. She was impressed with the Casa Grande Ruins so I can imagine she would have spent hours here studying the way the rooms were put together, standing in the community room, and walking the game area.

Homolovi pueblo ruins

A short distance away is the Citadel, Nalakihu and Lomaki Pueblos. While these are not quite as well preserved as the Wupatki Pueblo they are still worth stopping to visit. I spent two nights at the Homolovi AZ State Park which has pueblo ruins, a cemetery, and petroglyphs and two nights at Lyman Lake AZ State Park which has pueblo ruins and petroglyphs.

Casa Grande Ruins: me, my mom, Theresa Granger, and my grandkids

While all these places are well over three hours from my son’s house and would have made a long trip for my mom, we once lived in Flagstaff for over two years and these places would have been a great day trip for us. I’m mystified why we never visited any of these places at that time.

My mom and I

I hope my mom enjoyed this trip through each of these areas with me now.

Happy Mother’s Day!
